Fr John Martin

I was born and raised in the Inner City of Dublin, Ireland.  I am one of eight children, five sisters and two brothers.  Dad and Mum left Ireland and moved to Nottingham in the summer of 1967. On arrival I went to Saint Mary’s School, on Derby Road, run by the Sisters of Mercy. From there I went to Bishop Dunn, Secondary School, in Nottingham.

After leaving school I worked for the Sisters of Nazareth where I trained as a chef. After I qualified, I left the Sisters of Nazareth to become a brother of Saint John of God.  On completion of my religious studies at Ushaw Seminary, Co Durham. I was asked by the Provincial to train as a Social Worker and obtained my degree in BSc Dip SW at the University of North London.

On qualifying in the field of Social Work I worked in several of our Saint John of God Brothers services in the UK in various settings, Day Care, Respite Care, Nursing and Residential and then into Administration and Management. I was in the order for over 33 years and for twelve of those years I served as the Order’s Provincial in the UK, managing an annual turnover of 22 million pounds.

As Provincial of the Order, the role took me around the world where the Order is present in 52 countries, I did not visit all, but I did see around 15 and most of the Order’s services in Europe.

I felt the call to Priesthood for many years and eventually had to leave the Order to study for the Priesthood because the Brothers did not want to become a clerical Order and I returned to my home Diocese of Nottingham,

After studying for the Priesthood at Saint Mary’s College, Oscott Birmingham. I was Ordained to the Priesthood on 13 July 2013. Following my Ordination Bishop Malcolm appointed me as his Delegate for the Youth of the Diocese and I spent two very happy years at the Briars and at the same time I was curate to Fr John Guest at Christ the King Parish, Mackworth and All Saint’s Ashbourne.

Bishop Patrick appointed me in September 2015 as Assistant Priest to Fr James Early, Dean and Parish Priest of Saint Pius, Saint John Fisher Saint Mary’s on the Sea, Our Lady Star of the Sea and Corpus Christi, in Grimsby and Cleethorpes.   I lived in Grimsby for just under two years and loved every minute of my time there. I then moved to the Cathedral to Supply while there were some changes taking place.

In May 2017 I was appointed Parish Priest of The Divine Infant of Prague and Our Lady of Perpetual Succour.

I also have a number of diocesan responsibilities, Sick and Retired Priest, On-going Formation, supporting our LGBT Brothers and Sisters, Chaplain to Charismatic Renewal, Trustee to SPANNED just to name a few.

Now I begin a new chapter in my life as Parish Priest of Holy Cross, Hucknall. I am really looking forward to journeying with you all on your Christian adventure! If there is anything you want to ask me about my life or background, please do not hesitate to ask.

I enjoy, walking, reading, Irish folk music, travel, socialising and cooking.
